Rosie Lee Tompkins learned to quilt from her mother when she was young and began to quilt seriously in the 1980’s. Though she had a strong foundation in quilting she took creative liberties and developed pieces with movement that where she demonstrated a mastery of color, texture, and composition. Because she was not confined by rules, her quilts are absolutely moving. She used fabrics of all kinds ranging from bits of found embroidery and Mexican textiles to denim and the American flag. It’s as if her quilts are a melting pot of cultures. Join BAMPFA Director and Chief Curator Larry Rinder for a virtual tour of the exhibition Rosie Lee Tompkins: A Retrospective.
